Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning, the co-founders of the pioneering music swapping website Napster, have teamed-up again to launch a new video chat service called “Airtime,” which went live on Tuesday. The chat service allows users to connect to one other person at random, using their Facebook logins, and automatically displays shared interests. Here’s a video demonstrating the concept on the Airtime website.
The concept is based upon Chatroulette, a fad anonymous video chat service that connected users at random and briefly made headlines in 2010, before becoming overrun with explicit content and users fled. According to Businessweek, Parker briefly attempted to mentor Chatroulette into a more family friendly website, but after its creator insisted the website maintain anonymity features, Parker left and founded Airtime with Fanning.
