Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said Friday that having Mexico pay for President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall was “not a viable option.”

When CNN’s Manu Raju asked McCain about the border wall, he specified at first that a wall alone, without “technology, individuals, drones, observation,” wouldn’t secure the border.

Raju then asked about Trump’s pledge to have Mexico foot the bill: “Do you think that’s actually a viable option?”

“No,” McCain responded, adding when pressed: “Because it’s not a viable option.”

Trump has already signed an executive order to speed the process of building a border wall, which authorized officials to “identify and, to the extent permitted by law, allocate all sources of Federal funds” to build it.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said in late January that Mexico would pay for the wall “one way or another.” But Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has repeatedly and emphatically said his country would not pay for the project.
