In an op-ed published online Wednesday by Politico, Mark Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), argued that the National Rifle Association is out of step with the American public — and its own members — on the issue of background checks.
Kelly, who testified at a Senate hearing on gun violence last month, wrote that closing the so-called gun show loophole and establishing a single system for background checks represents a “simple, really important first step we can take,” saying he’s heard “huge determination to curb gun violence” from people across the country during his recent travels.
“But then I read the newspaper or watch TV, and I hear other voices — specifically, the leadership of the National Rifle Association — describing this proposed legislation in terms that are misleading at best,” Kelly wrote. They’re calling on legislators to make it easier, instead of harder, for criminals and the dangerously mentally ill to get guns.”
