The Senate will hold a hearing on May 23 on the Secret Service prostitution scandal. Sen. Joe Lieberman, chairman of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, announced the hearing in an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday morning. Secret Service director Mark Sullivan will testify at the hearing as well as the acting inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security Charles Edwards.
Lieberman said the hearing would address a few points. One, he said, he if the inspector general is satisfied with the investigation conducted by the Secret Service. Secondly, whether there indications before the scandal that should have been a warning ahead of what happened in Cartagena. And lastly, the hearing will seek to determine what steps Director Sullivan will take to make sure that this doesn’t happen again. “This is really a heartbreaking incident, and really a dangerous incident, and we really have got to make sure it never does happen again,” Lieberman said.
Thus far, the scandal has resulted in the dismissal of 9 employees from the Service.
