Larry Wilmore dedicated Tuesday’s edition of “The Nightly Show” to the divisive issue of child discipline, with the help of some “archival” footage.
Wilmore was amazed by a slew of stories about parents being arrested for relatively innocuous parenting choices, like allowing kids to skip church and letting them walk home from the local park alone.
“All of these stories remind me that parenting has changed over the years,” he said. “I’m not sure that it’s changed for the good.”
For some perspective on how norms of parenting have shifted, Wilmore introduced a grainy clip from his fake ’70s-era talk show “Soul Daddy,” “one of the hippest shows on UHF.”
“As a dad, I think the most important thing you can tell your kid is ‘shut the fuck up,'” an afro-sporting Wilmore told viewers.
“I acknowledge this might be a jive-turkey issue,” he continued. “You throw a book at the back of a kid’s head, that’s gonna get their attention.”
“After it’s gotten their attention, they can read the damn book,” the ’70s-era Wilmore said. “Dig that.”
