The number of people applying for U.S. unemployment benefits ticked down last week after dropping sharply the previous week, evidence hiring could pick up this month. Weekly applications dropped 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 367,000 in the week ending May 5, the Labor Department said Thursday, May 10, 2012. The previous week's figure was revised up slightly. “GOP remains silent”

With these numbers so does the WH.

It has been obvious for some time that we need a massive, pre-funded decade long infrastructure program, which would put millions of people to work at all skill levels repairing and expanding the country’s dangerously crumbling infrastructure system. But the Republicans have brazenly - and effectively - kept even a modest program from being enacted. The reason is simple: they believe, probably correctly, that an economy limping along will get them elected in 2016. All of this is blindingly obvious. What is stomach churningly terrifying is the total inability of the Democrats - from the president on down - to counter this Republican strategy and mobilize the American people.

Thank you CABchi. It is also my fear and has been for years. Obama’s legacy may very easily be that America slid back into recession in 2016 and the Republicans won the WH. It’s like a train wreck in slow motion. This economy is flying along at stall speed and has been for years. Stopping the bleeding back in 2009 and restoring some sense of order is a long long way from 2016.

It’s all about full-time living wage jobs. It should be the top priority for the WH with everything else a distant 2nd.

  5. What do you recommend the WH and the Dems, in general, do to “mobilize” the American people?
