George R. R. Martin is coming.

To help Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM) that is.

The author of the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series which was the basis for HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” will host a fundraiser for Udall at Martin’s personal theatre in Santa Fe in October.

Martin will host “a discussion on New Mexico issues and politics in support of Senator Udall’s re-election campaign.”

On Thursday Udall’s campaign sent out an email to supporters announcing a contest where a donation of $5 or more automatically enters them into a drawing to win a trip to Santa Fe to be at the VIP event.

The image in the email of the contest to go to the Martin-hosted event.

“Of course, this isn’t just a great chance to hang out with George. It’s also an opportunity to help out the campaign,” the email said.

Martin hasn’t shied away from sharing his opinion on politics before. He’s attacked “Republicans and their Teabagger allies” over voter suppression efforts on his personal blog.

Udall is facing a challenge from Republican Allen Weh. A recent poll by the Albuquerque Journal found that about half of likely New Mexico voters support Udall while 38 percent said they support Weh.

  1. Hadn’t realized that George actively participated in politics, good on him. Also casts a different light on the realpolitic that dominates his writing.

  2. I’m 90% pleased by this news and 10% concerned that it’s going to end with Udall’s head on a pike after he’s betrayed by his security staff, who turn out to be the henchmen of Priebus, secret bastard of Lord Cheney of Crapulence Rock, and so forth.

  3. Beyond awesome. Good for Faux, too: they can now pivot to 48 hours of bashing GRRM and the “horrible values” of GoT. Everybody wins.

  4. Martin will host “a discussion on New Mexico issues and politics in support of Senator Udall’s re-election campaign.”

Welcome, everyone, welcome. You all know me. Let’s go around the room and introduce ourselves. Ma’am.

I’m Martha, and when’s the book coming out?!?
