Facebook and Zynga filed updated documentation with the SEC on Thursday right after the market closed, announcing that they had entered into previously agreed upon amendments to their joint venture in Facebook games, like Zynga’s popular “Farmville.”
Specifically, the new developer agreements free Zynga to stop using Facebook Payments and Facebook login for games not launched on Facebook, but they also demand that Zynga continue to launch new games on Facebook first (before they launch on Zynga’s own site or other sites) except in narrow exceptions.
Perhaps most critically of all, as of March 23, 2013, “Facebook will no longer be prohibited from developing its own games,” according to Zynga’s filing. Zynga, which has seen its stock crumble in the past few months, slid over 12 percent in after-hours trading.
