With summer vacation season about to begin, municipal clerks around the state expect huge numbers of absentee ballots to be cast in the upcoming June 5 recall election.
Voting by absentee ballot begins Monday in the election that will pit Gov. Scott Walker against Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch against Madison firefighter Mahlon Mitchell. The recall elections were prompted by Republicans’ successful effort last year to end collective bargaining powers for most public union employees.
While some will vote by absentee ballot because they will be vacationing, others will do so to avoid long lines at the polls, which could rival those of a presidential election.
