Sen. Mark Warner has what can easily be called a comfortable lead over Republican challenger Ed Gillespie in an early poll of the Virginia Senate race.

The new Roanoke College poll released Tuesday found Warner leading Gillespie by 29 percentage points. The poll found Warner with support of 50 percent of the 553 registered voters while Gillespie had 21 percent.

Warner’s favorable rating is at 47 percent the poll also found while just 16 percent said they have an unfavorable view of him. Meanwhile, just 6 percent of those surveyed said they have a favorable view of Gillespie 75 percent didn’t answer the question about the former Republican National Committee Chairman.

The Roanoke college survey comes less than a week after Gillespie formally jumped into the Senate race. He was not expected to come in with high numbers in a matchup with Warner but Republicans still feel Gillespie is their best chance to defeat the incumbent Warner.

The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.
