Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) tweeted a Bible verse Sunday after a mass shooting had taken place at a gay nightclub that read man “reaps what he sows.”

The shooting left 50 people dead and dozens of others injured. The shooter, later identified as a man named Omar Mateen, was shot dead by SWAT members.

Patrick later deleted the tweet, but here’s what he said:

Patrick’s advisor, Allen Blakemore, said in a statement that the tweet was scheduled before the shooting and “was not done in response to last night’s tragedy.”

“We regret the unfortunate timing of these posts and ask everyone to join us in praying for the people of Orlando in this awful time,” Blakemore said in the statement.

Mateen’s father, Mir Seddique, told NBC News that religion had “nothing to do” with the shooting. He recounted that his son had been angered when he saw two men kissing in Miami and surmised that it might be related to the shooting.

  1. Looks like the tweet has been deleted. I would say “he had the decency to take it down.” However, the fact that he posted it in the first place means there’s nothing decent about this scum.

  2. Real Christian of him to express concern for the victims and the nation as a whole. On a Sunday morning, no less. I think a little time out in prayer and self-reflection is in order.

  3. Patrick is a tea party fascist scumbag. Too bad he didn’t visit Pulse last night.

  4. Despicable and heartless. All you can do is shake your head. I’m unaware of anything in the Christian religion that says to react with smug condescension when you hear about horrific massacres of innocent people.
