The Charleston County School District in South Carolina has banned students from displaying the Confederate flag on its campuses following the killing of nine people at a historic black church in the area, the Post and Courier reported on Monday night.
The policy was announced in the 2015-16 district student code of conduct.
From the Charleston newspaper:
The page reads in part that “in light of a year marred with racially divisive and tragic events” students would be prohibited from “wearing on campus clothing, jewelry or other apparel bearing the image of the Confederate flag.” It goes on to add that the image can’t be displayed prominently on vehicles driven to school.
Students will be asked to remove the flag on a case-by-case basis, according to the newspaper.
It took a new law and contentious debate to remove the flag from the South Carolina grounds of the statehouse.

This is going to end up at the Supreme Court where it will be struck down.
I can understand needing to keep order and peace on campuses to foster an environment that’s conducive to education, so I don’t disagree outright, but this does begin to tread on my free speech sensibilities. I’m not sure I support it either. Perhaps I don’t understand how truly offensive the flag is, because I totally agree that students shouldn’t be allowed to wear hoods and white sheets to school.
