Deputy National Security Advisor John Brennan told reporters today that no new prisoners would be brought to the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay. ‘It’s this administration’s policy to close Guantanamo’ he said, ‘and, despite some congressional hurdles that have been put in our path, we’re going to continue to pursue that.’
Instead, the administration seems to be tackling the problem of where to house captured terrorists on a case-by-case basis. In July, the Justice Department announce that an alleged Al Qaeda leader, Ahmed Warsame, was kept aboard a Navy ship for 2 months for interrogation before being taken to New York to face criminal charges. Brennan commented that the administration would house and try suspects in a ‘venue that is deemed most suitable and appropriate.’
