Authorities in Winter Park, Fla. have detonated a suspicious package found near an early voting site on Saturday. The package — described to TPM as a lunch box of some kind — prompted the evacuation of the Winter Park Public Library and the suspension of early voting earlier in the day.
Mary Gail Coffee, a spokesperson for the library, told TPM that law enforcement was not able to determine the contents of the package, even after police dogs and a robot capable of taking x-rays were brought to the scene.
“They decided to detonate the package,” Coffee said. “Which they did to great effect, about 15 minutes ago.”
According to Coffee, officials are now conducting a precautionary sweep of the library, and voting should resume at some point Saturday. Voting is still scheduled to end at 8 p.m., but Coffee said anyone on site by 8 p.m. would be allowed to vote.
