Perry To O’Reilly: Debate Participation Probably A ‘Mistake’

Bill O’Reilly finally got Rick Perry exactly where he wanted him on Tuesday night, putting the Texas governor through his paces on “The O’Reilly Factor.”

O’Reilly asked the Texas governor if he felt he’d made any mistakes in the campaign.

“Actually, these debates are set up for nothing more than to tear down the candidates,” Perry said. “It’s pretty hard to be able to sit and lay out your ideas and your concepts with a one minute response. So, you know, if there was a mistake made, it was probably ever doing one of the campaigns [debates] when all they’re interested in is stirring up between the candidates instead of really talking about the issues that are important to the American people.”

O’Reilly agreed with the candidate’s assessment of his debate performances, and also pointed out that his controversial decision to allow illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates was probably a damaging blunder as well.

O’Reilly told Perry he had analyzed the body language between him and Mitt Romney, stating that the pair “would be hitting each other if assault was legal.”

Perry unconvincingly attempted to downplay the personal animosity between the two, arguing “I think in his own words, he says, listen, you know, I need to say whatever I need to say for whatever office I’m running for.”

“How do you change at the age of 50 or 60 positions on life, positions on guns, positions on traditional marriage,” Perry asked O’Reilly rhetorically. “I mean those aren’t minor issues, Bill. So to change those at the age of 50 or 60 tells you all you need to know about that.”
