A new round of attacks has come up in the Montana Senate race, a close battle between first-term Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican Congressman Denny Rehberg. This time, the Montana Dems have filed a complaint with Congress, for a piece of official mail that Rehberg sent to constituents.
The complaint alleges that Rehberg’s official mailer — a practice known as “franking” — crossed the line into being campaign material.
Rehberg’s office did not immediately respond to TPM’s request for comment.
“How much did Rehberg’s campaign literature cost taxpayers? And how much more of our hard-earned money will he spend running for higher office?” said state party executive director Ted Dick, in a press release. “Refunding the taxpayer dollars he irresponsibly spent on this mailer is the only right thing for Congressman Rehberg to do about this mess.”
The mailer has Rehberg declaring: “Don’t be fooled by what you hear in the media or on TV. As a sportsman myself, I strongly support public access for hunting and fishing.”
He also says in a quote: “My official record in Congress is being falsely reported to Montanans. It’s time to get the facts, and set the record straight.”
