Jon Stewart and his “Best F#@king News Team” reported from Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday, as the Republican National Convention officially kicked off. The first night’s theme? “We did build that,” a nod, Stewart said, to the union workers who built the state-funded Tampa Bay Times Forum. Or a personal initiative of self reliance. Whatever.
The RNC was scheduled to start Monday, but events were delayed because of Tropical Storm Isaac. The storm is now, “in the eyes of God,” a hurricane, Stewart said, ripping the media’s analysis of the optics of covering a partisan political event while a deadly storm churns across the Gulf of Mexico. “The worst thing in the world” for Republicans, one pundit said, would be for networks to broadcast a split screen of partisan speeches next to scenes of Gulf residents evacuating.
“Really?” Stewart said. “Not only do I not think that would be the worst thing in the world for Republicans, I don’t think that’s the worst human evacuation-based split screen for Republicans.”
