It wouldn’t mean that much if you’re average pol had someone working for him who has a white supremacist/pro-confederate/white rights past. Maybe they’ve changed or maybe the pol didn’t know. But when it’s Rand Paul, given that his dad has basically always been surrounded by these types of people, it’s a bit different.

I just heard that Ed Morgan has died at 97. You may not have heard of him but he was unquestionably one of the great American historians of the 20th century, an expert on the Colonial and Revolutionary Era, with a truly seminal influence in his field. He was not only a great historian but perhaps just as influential as the advisor to numerous other American historians of the last two – actually last three – generations. He may be best known for his work on New England Puritanism. But to me, American Slavery, American Freedom is still unforgettable, probably the book that spawned my interest in the field.
