Mobile Devices

Unlike the posts over the weekend, this is one is just for tech geeks. It’s about usage statistics at TPM for different kinds of mobile devices. If you’re really a stats and tech geek, join me after the jump.

Traffic analytics are not a perfect measure. But they are pretty revealing for how people read TPM on mobile devices. We use Google analytics. And here’s what they say.

Judged by operating system, about 95% of the visits to TPM are from various flavors of Windows and Mac operating systems. No surprise there. Number three is the iPhone operating system which accounts for 2.4% of total visits.

Here are the full numbers for everything after Wintel and Mac …

iPhone 2.39%

Linux 1.68%

iPod 0.34%

(n/a) 0.20%

BlackBerry 0.09%

Android 0.06%

PalmOS 0.03%

SunOS 0.01%

Now, part of the skew likely derives from the fact that we have a version of the site partly optimized for iPhone. But there’s cause and effect here. It’s because we saw so many readers were using iPhone that we made the optimized version. What really stands out to me about these numbers though is that despite the fact that tons of people have Blackberries (tons of you contacted us in our discussion over the weekend), the number of people using Blackberries to access TPM is tiny compared to iPhones.

Late Update: A number of Blackberry users make the point that their use may not show up for the following reason. Because the web interface on Blackberry is so bad, they read TPM using Google Reader or other RSS reader. That doesn’t show up on our web analytics.
