Israel Elections Update

Just a quick update for those following the Israeli election results.

We don’t really know much more than we did a couple hours ago, which is a very mixed picture. Over-performance by Benny Gantz, the retired IDF Chief of Staff heading up what’s basically a center party (with some vaguely center-left tendencies) and opposing Netanyahu. It looks likely that his “Blue and White” party will get the most seats. But that’s by no means certain. We’re still just going on exit polls.

But that’s only part of the story, probably not the most important part of the story. The top seat-getting usually gets the first chance to form a government. But whether he can form a government is questionable, unless the actual results are substantially better for his possible coalition than even the encouraging exit polls suggest. Just in the last few minutes several of the right-leaning parties that might conceivably (though not likely) be part of a Gantz coalition have signaled support for Netanyahu.

For the moment, let me point out a few English language or English language-version Israeli news sites.

Haaretz (traditional center-left/Labor)
Ynet (center-not terribly ideological, online version of Yedioth Ahronoth)
Times of Israel (digital site focused on English language Israelis and US audience. Middle of the road for Israel)
Jerusalem Post (right of center, English language paper)
Israel Hayom (huge paper which Adelson created for Netanyahu)
