TPM Reader EA gets a reality check on marriage equality …
I had occasion to drive around the Hudson Valley this weekend in a futile attempt to escape the city’s humidity. I happened to drive pass a church bulletin board that said “One Nation (No Longer) Under God.” That stuck with me as I caught up on some photo galleries from yesterday’s jubilant Pride parade and again when reading about Rep. Huelskamp’s proposal.
There has been every reason to celebrate recently and to take stock, with awe, the incredible progress that the gay rights movement has delivered. Like most, I don’t see any reason why that momentum should be arrested.
And yet, I wonder whether the fog of victory has obscured the persistent size of anti-gay forces and the system-shock that the Supreme Court victory has delivered to them. I really hope that folks do not take progress for granted or assume that the Court will soon deliver total victory. The glory of the movement has been, in my opinion, the way in which so many individuals and organizations have taken up the challenge of changing hearts. I want to keep riding that bandwagon, not Justice Kennedy’s.
