It’s pretty awkward that the LA Chapter of the NAACP was scheduled to give Donald Sterling a lifetime achievement award in a couple weeks. Many of us had never heard Sterling’s name before this weekend. But for those who had, the fact that Sterling was a pretty big racist, both personally and in his business practices, was pretty well-known. More Good Times with Donald Sterling

As you know, wildly racist NBA Clippers owner Donald Sterling flamed out this weekend over the leaked audio recording. I had never heard of this guy before this weekend. But wow, what I was missing! Sterling is like the Rob Ford of the West Coast. A little more whack racism, seemingly less crack cocaine (but who knows?) – but somehow still kindred spirits nonetheless. But TPM Reader PK flagged to me more bizarreness and sleaze that there’s not even really a word for.

So Many Layers to This

The main takeaway from this LA Clippers controversy is that Clippers owner Donald Sterling is obviously a pretty massive racist.

As we’ve learned in recent days, “racist” has so many meanings which expose themselves through ways of talking about non-whites, negative attitudes toward certain racial groups, antiquated or well … just racist attitudes about work habits or the role of public assistance programs, a sense of political authority and threat. But when you’re telling your girlfriend, I don’t want you bringing black people to our games or “broadcast[ing] that you’re associating with black people”, you just have to say, wow, man, you’re really racist. Like you don’t even want to be near black people or you experience some form of shame that your girlfriend “associates” with black people.
