It’s pretty awkward that the LA Chapter of the NAACP was scheduled to give Donald Sterling a lifetime achievement award in a couple weeks. Many of us had never heard Sterling’s name before this weekend. But for those who had, the fact that Sterling was a pretty big racist, both personally and in his business practices, was pretty well-known. So, Peter Dreier asks, why was the NAACP in so deep with him?

As you know, wildly racist NBA Clippers owner Donald Sterling flamed out this weekend over the leaked audio recording. I had never heard of this guy before this weekend. But wow, what I was missing! Sterling is like the Rob Ford of the West Coast. A little more whack racism, seemingly less crack cocaine (but who knows?) – but somehow still kindred spirits nonetheless. But TPM Reader PK flagged to me more bizarreness and sleaze that there’s not even really a word for.
The main takeaway from this LA Clippers controversy is that Clippers owner Donald Sterling is obviously a pretty massive racist.
As we’ve learned in recent days, “racist” has so many meanings which expose themselves through ways of talking about non-whites, negative attitudes toward certain racial groups, antiquated or well … just racist attitudes about work habits or the role of public assistance programs, a sense of political authority and threat. But when you’re telling your girlfriend, I don’t want you bringing black people to our games or “broadcast[ing] that you’re associating with black people”, you just have to say, wow, man, you’re really racist. Like you don’t even want to be near black people or you experience some form of shame that your girlfriend “associates” with black people.
I wanted to take a moment to update everyone on our new comments system.
How does the owner of a major sports franchise come back from something like this?
Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX) says he’s facing an ethics investigation.
Attorneys for Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY) say they expect him to be indicted on federal charges.
Given that Sean Spicer is the head of communications for the RNC it makes perfect sense that he’s upset that his party is being tied to the terribly and almost comical racist remarks of renegade rancher Cliven Bundy and his band of armed freedom fighters standing their ground in the Nevada outback. (And yes, I’ve spent a decent amount of time in the area.) These positions on “negroes” and their being against “we the people” and possibly better off in slavery are not part of any Republican platform or literature or position papers.
Federal prosecutors say conservative pundit Dinesh D’Souza is exploiting his criticism of Obama to try to duck the criminal charges against him.
Nevada cattle rancher Cliven Bundy is not going away, and he’s now had some thoughts on Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr., which he happy to share with CNN in an incredibly cringe-worthy interview this morning.
