Stephen Colbert was exhausted Monday. He was in Washington over the weekend, celebrating this year’s Kennedy Center honorees: Broadway legend Barbara Cook, musician Neil Diamond, musician Sonny Rollins, actress Meryl Streep and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

Colbert personally “cell-ibrated” Yo-Yo Ma. And his honoring did not go unnoticed. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich tweeted: “Stephen colbert was brilliant at kennedy center honors tonight.”

“Newt Gingrich said I’m brilliant, okay,” Colbert said. “And Newt reserves his twitter feed for things of the utmost importance.” Those tweets include (now deleted): “I ate a Reese’s peanut butter cup for breakfast” and “Calista got me a Reese’s peanut butter egg. It is good too.”

But Gingrich is no lobbyist for the chocolate industry. “They gave him $1.5 million because he’s a well-known chocolate historian,” Colbert said.
