From The Reporter’s Notebook

From the Department of #TBT: Remember the anti-Donald Trump activist whose election as chair of a Texas county GOP nearly destroyed the party? TPM’s Katherine Krueger reports on his return to the national stage, this time when Roger Stone had him booted from the grounds of Trump’s Austin rally for toting a massive sign calling the GOP nominee a “child rapist” while wearing a jester’s hat.

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall: “The politics of the ’94 bill proved very difficult for Bernie Sanders, a clear supporter of civil rights and racial inclusion, to use against Clinton in the Democratic primaries. That a white racist like Trump might have better luck at it seems dubious in the extreme. But that’s not even the biggest problem. In their feverish brainstorms the Trump team seems to have forgotten that most of their campaign now revolves around a historic law and order crackdown, putting the ‘tough’ cops back in charge, and ‘giving them back [their] spirit and by allowing them to go and counterattack.’ In other words, Trump’s advisors or Trump or whoever else is making this stuff up imagines that Trump will run simultaneously as Dirty Harry and a critic of mass incarceration. This lacks the requisite thought to rise to the level of disingenuous; it’s just stupid, throwing everything against the wall and hoping something might stick.”

Say What?!

“It’s going to be important for us and for Donald Trump to continue down this measured path that he’s on.”

– RNC chair Reince Priebus suggested to reporters that Trump has had “a good couple of weeks” with “mature comments.”

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “John McCain understood the importance of a graceful concession speech. This is why, over her intense lobbying, McCain did not let Palin speak on election night 2008. Palin, an idiot and a loose cannon, might have incited the RW peasantry to violence. Similarly, in 1996 when Clinton defeated Dole, Dole rebuked the hotheads in his audience by saying: ‘Clinton is my opponent, not my enemy.’ Although I cannot abide either Dole or McCain I acknowledge and honor their statesmanship on the night of their losses. I’m worried about Trump. I’m quite convinced he does not have a clue that a graceful concession speech is more important for the nation than any victory speech. I worry that he could incite his base to ‘take matters into their own hands,’ and thus unleash mayhem. I’m no longer worried that Trump might win. But I’m very concerned about the way he exits this stage.”

Related: No matter which policy positions for immigration Trump finally lands on, he has already done long-term damage to the Republican Party’s prospects with Latino voters.
