Trump Has Nothing On These Wacky GOP Candidates Running in 2016
The Gist: With a beautiful border wall, a ban on Muslims and a declaration that former POW and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) wasn’t a war hero, Donald Trump has been one heck of a phenomenon to behold. But, while he may be the most brazen Republican candidate in the spotlight today, he is just one of the many colorful Republicans seeking federal office in 2016.

From The Reporter’s Notebook
SiriusXM suspended conservative pundit Glenn Beck for a week after a guest on his show, fiction writer Brad Thor said he “guarantees” Donald Trump would temporarily suspend the Constitution during his possible presidency and wondered aloud if a “patriot” would “step up” and stop him, TPM’s Katherine Krueger reported. Many took the comments to be Thor wondering if someone would assassinate Trump. In a statement to Politico, the network said the comments “may be reasonably construed by some to have been advocating harm against an individual currently running for office, which SiriusXM cannot and will not condone.”
Agree or Disagree?
Josh Marshall: “As we’ve noted, quite apart from the policies he’s embraced, Trump has shown himself over the course of the campaign to be an emotionally needy, pathological liar. Here we see that he also not only happily launches defamatory racist attacks on a federal judge but impugns the patriotism of an entire ethnic community in the United States.”
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “I think it’d be wise for Hillary to nominate a strong Liberal. The rap on her from the Left is that she’ll tack with the wind. Nominating a Liberal from a Liberal state would send a strong message. Especially one with the fortitude to break the law in order to enforce it. Moral “True North” plays in this environment. Also, there’s the bonus of playing up the economic difference between Red and Blue states. California has done very well through this recession. Also, for Climate voters, Cali is rapidly becoming ground zero. It would be good to show how green jobs can protect the environment while they grow the economy. (Jay Inslee also possible for this) Another strong possible pick from Cali — Villaraigosa. Covers many of these same bases. Hillary already plays well in the South, she does well among minorities, and we’re not taking Texas. So, as much as I like Castro (and, I do), I’m not sure I see the value of adding him to the ticket (vis the election). In the long term, there is certainly the possibility that having a Dem from Texas will bolster the Texas Dem party… but, If that’s the benefit, Tim Kaine is probably a better choice. Alos, if she weren’t in such a crucial fight, atm.. Tammy Duckworth would be pretty good. I dunno. The Dem party actually has a super deep bench for a change.”
