How Trump Is Breaking McConnell’s Once Congenial Republican Majority

The Gist: The Republican Senate met for lunch Tuesday afternoon in the Capitol. Members filing out of the meeting said, no, Donald Trump did not come up. Maybe that is because no one can agree on what to do about him.

Joe Biden: ‘I Would Have Been The Best President’

Trump Says He Would Appoint Pro-Life Justice To Supreme Court

The Gist: Donald Trump on Tuesday night said that if he is elected president, he will appoint a pro-life justice to the Supreme Court.

A federal judge Tuesday ordered the release of the names of all individuals who allegedly had prior knowledge of a politically-motivated scheme to close lanes on the George Washington Bridge in 2013, TPM’s Allegra Kirkland wrote of NJ.com’s report. “This court is satisfied that the privacy interests of uncharged third parties are insufficiently compelling to outweigh the public’s right of access,” U.S. District Judge Susan Wigenton said in the ruling, as quoted by NJ.com.

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall: “This all seems of a piece with what Republican officeholders across the country have been grasping their way towards over the last week. Trump has won the nomination. There’s no way any longer to deny that reality or the legitimacy of his win. But as I noted, most members of Congress and governors are essentially signaling they plan to spend the presidential on the sidelines. At a minimum, they want to bide their time.”

Say What?!

“A 37-year-old Florida man only noticed he’d been shot while cleaning his revolver two days later when he changed from a black shirt to a brown one and noticed a blood stain.”

– Apparently the bullet pierced his skin and muscle before exiting his body.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “It was never about taxes, or bloated government. It was always racism behind the populism of resentment. That faction was the necessary component of the GOP coalition—even with all the money there are not enough voters in the business sector to help. And too many actual business and financial people know the GOP policies are incoherent, and not good for business over the long run. The facts are not friendly to GOP platforms, and too many people know better. All that remains is the ignorant rump of white privilege. Trump voters don’t really care about wealth inequality, or taxes, or fiscal policy, or the Fed, or the bank bailouts. They don’t care about the fights over climate change and energy policy, and don’t much care about the gender issues. I don’t think they care that the GOP did not deliver on any of its promises during the Obama years. They don’t have much remaining loyalty to the party of the Bushes. What they have is anger at everybody that is not them, and they are aware they are becoming outnumbered. This is not a populist revolution—it is reactionary nativism. It’s not that Trump is an outsider, it is that he brings out nasty core inside the GOP. The election is not about booting the elite, but about preserving the elitism of white people.”
