Donald Trump claimed in a statement Monday afternoon that terrorist groups are “hoping and praying” Hillary Clinton is elected president, turning a criticism she often lobs his way on its head, TPM’s Esme Cribb reported. Earlier the same day, Clinton cited former CIA director Michael Hayden’s comments calling Trump a “recruiting sergeant” for terrorist groups, a criticism the Trump campaign mirrored in its later flurry of responses.
Agree or Disagree?
Josh Marshall: “As I’ve argued before, authoritarians present themselves as the solution to violence and disorder. But they actually require it because it is the their justification for rule. Trump’s pitch is a perfect illustration of this. He says the country is falling apart. We’re not safe. And it will only get worse until he’s President. And look at what he said when pressed by critics about how exactly he would combat ISIS or domestic terror attacks any more successfully than we and our cowering police and counter-terrorism personnel already are. Here’s what said at a rally in Colorado: ‘I will give you good results. Don’t worry how I get there, okay? Please.’ This is the entirety of his campaign.”
Say What?!
“I should be a newscaster because I called it before the news.”
– Trump did a victory lap for referring to Saturday’s explosion in New York as a “bomb” before key information was released to the public.
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “Seriously, if there is not some major, BIPARTISAN outrage from elected Republican officials as well as media figures. If Trump surrogates are not called upon to answer for why he says such things (and are stopped cold and forced to answer when they try to obfuscate and instead answer the questions they want to answer), then we as a nation are in trouble. Remember when McCain corrected supporters and told them Obama was a good man whom he simply disagreed with. That was just EIGHT years ago. Where is that McCain? Where is that Republican Party? I long for a contest of ideas.”
Related: Trump took credit for referring to the explosive set off in New York on Saturday night as a “bomb” before law enforcement.
