From The Reporter’s Notebook
In a Tuesday rally, Donald Trump argued that he is being held to a different standard than Hillary Clinton, saying that “it would be a whole different ball game” if he used the same excuses she did. “She said the other day, she short-circuited,” he said, TPM’s Esme Cribb reported. “Could you imagine if I said that I short-circuited? They would be calling for my execution. Electric chair, they’d bring back the electric chair.”
Yesterday’s Daybreaker incorrectly referred to Virginia Foxx as the U.S. Representative for Virginia. Foxx actually represents North Carolina’s 5th District.
Agree or Disagree?
Josh Marshall: “Of course, if Trump suffers a devastating defeat, as now seems at least plausible, maybe hardcore supporters will simply see the Trumpite cause is hopeless? This does appear to be fairly widespread conventional wisdom. Trump goes down to an epic defeat. Establishment Republicans haul out a big bucket of ‘I told you so’ and retake the reins. Does that sound right? It doesn’t to me. We’ve now had a version of the GOP that is strongly anti-immigrant, white nationalist in character, hostile to foreign trade as much as its hostile to foreign countries and the people who come from those countries. We’ve seen that a big chunk of the Republican party is hugely supportive of that program. The excitement, the galvanization of a large part of the electorate – I think that’s all too transformative to be dropped in favor of the pre-2016 GOP.”
Say What?!
“Nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is.”
– Donald Trump suggested at a Tuesday rally that gun owners might be the only ones who can take action against a Clinton presidency.
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “I absolutely think Trump will debate because in his mind he’s already won them and will convince others of this as well. Which won’t be hard because the bar is set so low for him to begin with. He shows up, he’ll get points. He doesn’t drool, he’ll get points. And short of him leaving the studio with 2 black eyes, one bloody nose, and yelling “I coulda been a contender…” it will be called a wash because Hillary is a seasoned politician, a great debater and knows her shit. And unless she mops the floor with that thing on his head the narrative will be why didn’t she put him away.”
Related: Clinton’s campaign chair said that she will participate in all three presidential debates, challenging Trump to agree to the same.
