From The Reporter’s Notebook
TPM’s Tierney Sneed was present at Tuesday’s confirmation hearing for Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), which was attended by, and frequently interrupted by, protestors. Here, protestors sit before the hearing wearing “Great Americans Use Cannibas” shirts.
Agree or Disagree?
Josh Marshall: “Some people are saying that we shouldn’t be looking at these news reports through the prism of the credibility of the document but rather the intelligence community’s retaliation or warning to Trump. I don’t think we can rule that out. But as much as we may dislike Trump, intelligence agencies using the information they gather against an elected President is a very bad thing. We shouldn’t lose sight of that. Of course, we should also not expect our spy apparatus to cover for presidential wrongdoing or leave the country vulnerable to foreign subversion. Regardless this is extreme high-wire behavior for the whole country, whatever the underlying facts. It’s bad from every different direction that we’re here.”
Say What?!
“We can still speak in this country. I’m making an appeal to all you people — you want to know what? Stand up for what’s right and walk out with me. That’s the only thing they’ll know.”
– Former Sen. Al D’Amato (R-NY) caused a stir Monday night when he was escorted off a flight for apparently trying to incite passengers into a chant and march against the flight crew.
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “What I think cannot be denied is that a hostile foreign power has targeted the US with a disinformation campaign aimed at destabilizing the election and installing their preferred candidate, that this campaign engaged in espionage and computer network breaches, misinformation and fabricated news and that one political faction within the US has decided that they are OK with it because they were the beneficiary. If you ever find yourself in that situation I would advise you to rethink your position. We really ought to be focusing our ire at the Russians (and not at Trump, unless it is demonstrated that his campaign was involved) and trying to find ways of protecting against this in the future.”
