A Hamstrung SCOTUS Is About To Have A Mess Of Voting Lawsuits At Its Doorstep

The Gist: The signs that the Supreme Court is grappling with a depleted bench are starting to show. But what has been a trickle of tie-votes, bizarre orders and slowed activity could turn into a series of orders with contradictory effects as the court is confronted with an onslaught of election-related litigation in the lead-up to Nov. 8.

Hillary Clinton Responds To Bill’s Clash With Black Lives Matter Protesters

Report: Trump Has Donated Rounds Of Golf To Charity, Not Money

The Gist: Although Donald Trump has touted his generous donations to charity, over the last five years, the Republican presidential candidate has not made any monetary donations, according to a Washington Post report.

From The Reporter’s Notebook

On Sunday, The Boston Globe published a front page illustrating what a Trump presidency could look like, TPM’s Sara Jerde reported. The page, which featured the headline “Deportations To Begin” among others, was paired with an editorial in which the paper suggested that Mitt Romney or Paul Ryan should be chosen as the GOP nominee at the convention.

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall: “Whatever you believe about that, the basic chain of events does not change. Clinton’s mind-bogglingly reckless and impulsive relationship with Lewinsky did come to light in early 1998. And after it became clear that the mere revelation was not enough to drive Clinton from office, congressional Republicans grew increasingly determined to find a way to fashion it into a crime which would justify Clinton’s impeachment. (It is worth remembering that Clinton’s vaunted second term approval ratings only truly hit their highs after the Lewinsky scandal broke.) And that they did.”

Say What?!

“Well, he’s threatening, you go to these county conventions, and you see the tactics, Gestapo tactics, the scorched-earth tactics —”

Paul Manafort, a top aide to Donald Trump, said Sunday that Ted Cruz was scaring delegates for their votes.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member:“I will gladly and confidently vote for either Sanders or Clinton. I will advocate for them, and will likely argue against some of their policy decisions. In reading this thread, I perceive an undercurrent of logic — because he/she did X, it proves Y, and leads to the conclusion Z — which does not serve us well. History has shown time and again that the weight of responsibility and the power of popular persuasion has more effect that X, Y, or Z. A few years ago, how many of us would have speculated that Chief Justice Roberts would vote to uphold the Affordable Care Act? Or, prior to 1990, that President Clinton would have proposed the crime bill he did? Our task is to select the most capable administrator, not the purist saint. The latter is what Republicans do. Democrats follow the liberal process of honest information, reasonable compromise, and majority rule. Ultimately, our vote boils down to wanting a king/daddy, or affirming the supremacy of the people.”
