From The Reporter’s Notebook
After a week that saw a shooting with double-digit casualties and the symbolic defunding of Planned Parenthood, one Missouri lawmaker suggested that guns should be regulated like abortion. State Rep. Stacey Newman (D) pre-filed a bill that would put extreme restrictions on gun purchasing not unlike those that exist on abortion in her state. They include a 72-hour waiting period for purchase, watching a 30-minute safety video, and spending time with families affected by gun violence. Though TPM’s Caitlin Cruz acknowledges it is unlikely to pass, she’s glad that at least one lawmaker is calling out the hypocrisy on a small-scale.
Agree or Disagree?
Josh Marshall: “In the debate about terrorism, a topic which grips the national psyche like almost no other issue, talking about gun control is not only iffy on policy merits but sends a very bad signal that what you’re proposing in order to get a handle on the problem is something we all know to a damn certainty isn’t even going to happen.”
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “I have an argument with Dean Baker as well. He seems to dismiss some of the real issues that have caused the Increase in Inequality. How did we get to “Casino Capitalism”? As I see it, just about everything is political and it still all boils down to our political policies that determine the out come and results of inequality. Also, we have a very short term vision in congress. It is all about today, not about looking down the road. We need visionaries and we have short term capitalists thinkers in office.”
Related: Despite their rhetoric, Americans don’t actually support policies to reduce income inequality.
