It’s On: Trump Releases Details About Rival Event To Fox News Debate

Experts Fear Oregon Standoff Death Could Spark More Extremist Outbursts

The Gist:  Law enforcement authorities know that violent confrontations with extremists can have later repercussions beyond the immediate loss of life.

From The Reporter’s Notebook

Donald Trump had at least one cheerleader for his boycott of Thursday’s Fox News debate, according to TPM’s Caitlin MacNeal. MSNBC host Joe Scarborough compared Trump’s stand against Fox to Ronald Reagan’s famous “I’m paying for this microphone!” moment in the 1980 debates.

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall: Many of our readers were a mix of scratching their heads and getting increasingly frustrated that the yahoos in Oregon “were allowed to openly flaunt their law breaking, take over federal property, menace civilians and law enforcement all with near total impunity…. In the context of the on-going dialog about race, police use of force and violence and all the ways these wrenching issues interweave with each other, this whole ridiculous episode amounted to a sort of white privilege performance art. Sometimes you’ve got to really work at it as a middle-aged white guy in camo to get shot by a cop.”

Say What?!

“We’ve seen over the last several months that Mr. Trump has repeatedly chosen to kick reporters out of the room for asking tough questions. It appears he’s taking that approach to a new level by avoiding those questions entirely.”

– White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest took a jab at Trump for backing out of the GOP debate.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “I don’t think it has anything to do with sexism. There’s real, serious policy differences between the two of them. And there are serious qualms about Hillary’s record, and the policies she vocally supported when she didn’t have an actual vote (yes, support for welfare-to-work and 3 strikes can be attributed to Hillary, not because Bill signed them into law, that’d be sexist, but because Hillary vocally supported each in the 90’s and continued defending the same policies well into her tenure as Senator). The statistical voting records only show so much, because not every policy issue gets brought to the Senate floor. Indeed, the most liberal policies will almost never be brought to a floor for the Senate to vote on. Raising those issues doesn’t make me or any one else sexist. And finally, it’s not about the past, it’s about the future. That’s what elections are about. So if I can look at what Hillary’s proposing versus what Bernie’s proposing, and see real differences, and know that I come down on the side of Bernie, does that make me a sexist?”
