GOP candidates are baying at a new boogeyman, gun confiscation, in the wake of this month’s mass shooting in Oregon. TPM reporter Catherine Thompson says it’s instructive to look at how their warnings that President Obama and Hillary Clinton are coming to take Americans’ guns reverberated through the conservative blogosphere. They followed the same pattern as the paranoia earlier this year surrounding the “Jade Helm 15” military exercise.

From a TPM Prime member: “The other point was that Hillary seemed very realistic about what working with Republican controlled legislature (or half a legislature) would be like. I admire the truly good faith effort Obama put into trying to work with Republicans (up until 2014 or so), but I think that was a very foolish decision and really cost the country. If Democrats had been willing to play hardball, they would have passed a better Healthcare bill, or at the very least, passed it faster, giving less time for the outrage over it to build. “
