The Opening Night Of Trump’s RNC Was Even Weirder Than You Thought It’d Be

The Gist: There were a number of utterly bizarre moments that came out of day one of Trump’s Republican National Convention.

Twitter Shreds Melania Trump’s Plagiarized Speech

The Gist: Portions of Melania Trump’s opening night speech at the GOP convention were nearly identical to those spoken by Michelle Obama at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Gloomy Old Party: GOP Clings To Themes Of Threats, Violence, And Betrayal

The Gist: The first night of the GOP convention painted a bleak picture of a country on edge and under threat, with the specter of violence never far from the surface.

From The Reporter’s Notebook

On Monday evening, Donald Trump’s wife Melania appeared to lift significant portions of her prime time convention speech from remarks delivered by now-First Lady Michelle Obama at the 2008 Democratic National Convention where her husband Barack Obama was first nominated for President, TPM’s Esme Cribb reported. Before delivering her remarks, Melania Trump told NBC’s Matt Lauer that she had only read the speech over once on the plane: “And that’s all, because I wrote it with a little help as possible.”

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall: “We’re still trying to piece together just what happened. But it seems at least that convention planners, seeing that the anti-Trump forces had gathered enough signatures to force an embarrassing vote, simply ditched the rules and moved on. We don’t know that happened. The question turns on the RNC organizers’ claim that three states pulled out of the demand at the last moment. (‘States’ in theory could change their mind with a small number of delegates switching positions.) The RNC folks just asserted that without saying just how that happened or who had done what.”

Say What?!

“But you just look at the body language and there’s something going on. Look, there’s something going on.”

– Trump repeated the phrase “there’s something going on” five times during an interview about the fatal shootings in Baton Rouge.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “I think any effect it might have would be overrated. We know nothing sways his base. So if this came during the primaries, it’d be brushed off by his base as ‘just another hack liberal media type trying to character assassinate the great Donald Trump.’ As for the general, I think it’s timed right (maybe too early if anything), but I just don’t know if this is going to be the thing that changes too many people’s minds.”
