From The Reporter’s Notebook

At the same conference where he hosted some Republican presidential candidates, an anti-gay pastor said that he’d cover himself in cow manure and stand outside the church if his son married a man. According to TPM’s Sara Jerde, the pastor has also said that gay people should be put to death and that children who read the “homosexual” Harry Potter series would be better off “drowned at the bottom of the sea.”

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall thinks that Carson’s reliance on his inaccurate biography isn’t his main problem. Instead, the issue is that Carson casts every misperception or failed memory in the most self-glorifying and self-righteous light imaginable.

Say What?!

“There are families, we’re talking Christian families, pastors’ families, elders’ families from good, godly churches — their sons are rebelling, hanging out with homosexuals and getting married and the parents are invited. What would you do if that was the case? Here is what I would do: sackcloth and ashes at the entrance to the church and I’d sit in cow manure and I’d spread it all over my body.”

– An anti-gay pastor had strong feelings about his son potentially marrying a man.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “While it is true that the proximate CAUSES of the mortality increase are “poisonings” (by alcohol and prescription and nonprescription opioids), suicides, and chronic liver disease, the study begs the question, as the authors admit, what are the CAUSES of the proximate causes? The authors suggest some economic and physiological (morbidity-based) root causes. Are there others? How about the loss of job opportunities (the “giant sucking sound” suggested by Ross Perot in the dim, distant past as a consequence of trade agreements like NAFTA – implemented in 1993)? How about “welfare reform” (sic), 1996? How about the explosion in meth use? What are other possible root causes?”
