Ben Carson wrote in an op-ed that he “never intended” for his comments about gun control and the Holocaust “to diminish the enormity of the tragedy or in any way to cause any pain for Holocaust survivors or their families.” As TPM’s Caitlin MacNeal points out, the Republican presidential candidate did not apologize for suggesting that Jewish people in Germany could have better defended themselves against Hitler’s regime had they been armed. But his Wednesday comments mark the first time he stepped back from the Hitler reference after repeatedly defending his argument.
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “More than anything, the evening exposed the stark contrast between the low level, personality-driven way the media treats campaign issues, and the higher ideals that at least the Democratic candidate campaigns wish to promulgate. I was flat out disturbed by Anderson Cooper, who’s questions were mostly about trying to take the debate into the “he said-she said-what’s your reaction?” gutter. Not so much “gotcha” journalism as journalism designed to evoke reaction and emotion. Then there was the whole, disturbing thing of cutting off answers with his rapid fire questioning method. Perhaps Cooper’s style is an indication of just how badly the Republican method of idiot politics has polluted the pool. Still, he really doesn’t deserve to be moderating debates about serious issues.”
