The platform committee for the Republican Party rejected language in support of civil unions for same-sex couples on Tuesday, CNN reports. The committee is in Tampa, Fla., ahead of the Republican National Convention next week, where delegates will approve the platform put forward by the committee.

According to CNN’s account, James Bopp, a Romney campaign adviser from Indiana, called civil unions “counterfeit marriage,” and Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, stood up for “traditional marriage” during deliberations. As a result, language in support of civil unions was rejected. The party will continue to support only marriage between one man and one woman.
