Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is a real “civil rights champion,” Stephen Colbert said Thursday night. But how does he figure?

Responding to what Colbert called a “gotcha” question at the Iowa State Fair, Romney told the crowd: “Corporations are people, my friend.”

With his answer, Colbert said, “Romney proved he didn’t just dress like the Average Joe, he understands the Average Joe.”

“Yes, corporations are people, my friend,” Colbert added. “They’re like members of your family. Your brother, fax machine. Your Uncle Ben. Your Aunt Annie. Your Mama Celeste, your Go Daddy.”

And Colbert is confident voters will remember Romney’s “courageous” new campaign slogan come election time.
