A Democratic state lawmaker in Maryland has reportedly apologized after some of her colleagues from the state’s legislative black caucus confronted her on Monday evening, claiming she had used the n-word during a private gathering at a cigar bar in January, The Washington Post reported.
Delegate Mary Ann Lisanti, a white woman who represents Harford County in Maryland, allegedly described another county — Prince George County — as the “n—– district,” according to her colleagues who spoke to the Post. During the meeting on Monday with fellow Maryland lawmakers, she reportedly “apologized several times,” but said she did not remember using the slur.
“She recognizes how she has hurt so many within the caucus, and she hoped to repent from this,” Delegate Barryl Barnes (D), who represents Prince George County and chairs the state’s black caucus, told the Post, adding that he was “really disturbed” by the allegation. “She said that she doesn’t remember fully what happened, but she recognizes what happened.”
Lisanti did not immediately return TPM’s request for comment.
