For the first time in its 172-year history, The Economist magazine has named a woman as its top editor.

Zanny Minton Beddoes is currently the business affairs editor for the magazine, and leads the magazine’s coverage of business and economics related content as well as science and technology. She previously served as economics editor. Before joining the weekly in 1994, Beddoes was an economist for the International Monetary Fund.

Beddoes will succeed John Micklethwait as editor of the magazine on Feb 2.
Micklethwait, who is going to Bloomberg News, served as editor for nine years and under his leadership the magazine’s circulation increased from 1.1 million to 1.6.

Beddoes will be the 17th editor in the magazine’s history.

Correction: they refer to themselves as a “newspaper” even though it is published in the form-factor of a magazine.

  4. I dunno, Micklethwait’s a pretty cartoon-Brit moniker too (though more Downstairs than posho, I guess).
