Omar Gonzalez, the fence jumper carrying a knife who made it deep into the White House, was not tackled, in the end, by an on-duty Secret Service agent. He was actually tackled by an off-duty Secret Service agent who was leaving for the night, according to a new report in The Washington Post.
The off-duty agent just happened to be going through the White House when Gonzalez made it over the fence, across the lawn, into the building and through several rooms on the main floor.
That detail is the latest in a series revelations by Post reporter Carol D. Leonnig about Gonzalez’s sprint into the White House. The Secret Service had previously said that Gonzalez was stopped inside the front door of the White House. But on Monday, the Post reported that Gonzalez actually made it as far as the East Room when he was tackled, having already fended off one Secret Service officer who tried to stop him.
