Anthony Weiner on Tuesday walked back comments he made earlier this week that sparked even more speculation about Hillary Clinton’s expected 2016 presidential bid after a Clinton spokesman offered a testy response to the beleaguered New York City mayoral candidate.
Weiner told BuzzFeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith on Monday that he knew what role his wife, Clinton aide Huma Abedin, would play on the former secretary of state’s anticipated campaign. But Weiner played it coy, telling Smith, “I’m not telling you.”
Clinton’s team fired back on Tuesday.
“We have absolutely no clue what he was talking about. Maybe his campaign does. Doubt it though,” Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill said in a statement, according to CNN.
When asked about the comment on Tuesday night, Weiner played it off as a joke.
“Have you ever heard that sometimes people say, ‘Yes, but if I tell you I’d have to kill you?’” Weiner said, as quoted by ABC News. “It was a joke, everyone laughed, it was a joke.”
He added, “I have no insight into campaign 2016. I’m struggling right here with 2013.”
