President Obama’s defense of public funding for children’s television isn’t just for Big Bird anymore. At a rally in Ohio Tuesday, Obama namechecked two more Sesame Street characters he said would be on the chopping block if Mitt Romney is elected.
“So for all you moms and kids out there, don’t worry. Somebody’s finally getting tough on Big Bird,” Obama said, repeating a common refrain from his campaign following last week’s presdiential debate when Romney reiterated his plan to defund PBS. Elmo, Obama joked, “is making a run for the border.” Oscar The Grouch, he added, “hiding out in the trash can.”
Romney’s call for defunding PBS, which he says is part of his plan to cut government spending and balance the budget, is not a serious policy, Obama said.
“That is not leadership.” Obama said. “That’s salesmanship.”
