The Pentagon confirmed that U.S. Special Forces aided Iraqi soldiers in rescuing hostages from an Islamic State prison in northern Iraq on Thursday morning.
During the rescue, one American soldier was wounded and later died, according to a statement from Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook. Four Peshmerga soldiers were wounded.
“On behalf of the men and women of the Department of Defense, we offer our sincere condolences to the family of the U.S. service member who was killed in this operation,” Cook said in the statement.
During the operation, about 70 hostages were rescued, including more than 20 members of the Iraq Security Forces, according to the Pentagon. Soldiers also captured five ISIL terrorists and killed several others during the mission.
Cook said the rescue was carried out “after receiving information that the hostages faces imminent mass execution.”
The hostage rescue attempt was initially reported on Thursday morning by CNN, CBS News, and the New York Times.
