University Of Rhode Island Campus On Lockdown

The University of Rhode Island’s main campus in Kingston, R.I. has been placed on lockdown after a report of a man with a gun, The Providence Journal reported on Thursday. 

“We are sending alerts to all students and faculty to stay within their buildings,” a spokesperson for the university told the newspaper. 

According to the paper, no shots have been reported fired. 

A statement on the university’s website said:

We are investigating reports of a person with a firearm in Chaffee Hall on the Kingston Campus. Secure yourself indoors (not Chaffee), stay there, and do not move about outside until further notice. The emergency alert system has been activated

Update 12:26 p.m.: According to WBUR, Boston’s NPR station, the head of the Rhode Island State Police has told the Associated Press that there is no evidence of an active shooter at the campus.
