An armed security officer shot a man who allegedly stabbed a woman in Union Station in Washington, D.C., before 1 p.m. on Friday, according to the D.C. Police Department. The officer was assigned to a fixed post at the Securities and Exchange Commission, which is connected to Union Station by a tunnel.

D.C. Police Commander Jeff Brown said at a press conference on Friday afternoon that the man stabbed the woman in the side and the guard followed the man for about 50 feet. The officer asked the man to stop and the man turned and lunged at the officer, Brown said. The officer then fired one shot at the man.

The man and woman were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries; the officer was unharmed.

Here’s a video from Washington Post Robert Costa from the press conference:

It’s unclear what happened before the stabbing.

Police said there was not an “active shooter situation.” Brown confirmed it was a domestic dispute and not related to terrorism despite the anniversary of 9/11.

A man was taken out of the Union Station McDonald’s by stretcher around 1:10 p.m., according to Costa, who was in Union Station at the time of the shooting.

Multiple law enforcement agencies urged residents to stay away from Union Station, which is near Capitol Hill.
