Despite recent high-ranking defections and increasingly sharp rhetoric from the US State Department, the head of the UN monitoring team in Syria says the level of violence in the country is currently at an “unprecedented level.” General Robert Mood, tasked with heading the observer team in Syria, said, “The violence is continuing and escalating because the parties involved have decided that their objectives are better served by using violence than by choosing a political process.”
Citing an inability to carry any form of dialogue in the nation’s current state, Mood’s comments were seen as further indication that Syria has continued a slide toward civil war. The UN’s mandate expires July 20, and it is unclear what the organization’s next step will be.
