The Daily Telegraph reports that a ship carrying military helicopters and missiles to Syria from Russia has been turned back off the Scottish coast, after its insurance was canceled on order of the British government. The insurer, Standard Club, released a statement saying that it canceled the cover “in view of the nature of the voyage.” The cancellation came after British security officials informed the insurer that the shipment would likely be a breach of EU sanctions.
According to the US, Russia has continued to ship 20 Mig-29 M2 fighters to Syria, per the two countries’ 2007 military contract. The cancellation comes a day after Russia announced it was sending two amphibious assault ships to its naval base in Tartus.
