Twitter made a surprise announcement on its developer blog on Thursday revealing that as of February 6, 2013, it would begin lengthening by 2 the number of characters that hyperlinks pasted in tweets take up, giving users 2 fewer characters with which to compose their messages.
“We don’t have anything to share beyond the fact that we made this change for a variety reasons,” a Twitter spokesperson told TPM in a statement.
Twitter has a 140 character limit on each tweet, but over the summer introduced Twitter Cards, a method of showing multimedia and article summaries in an expanded view of tweets with links.
